The Movies Were Too Political! A Pre-Oscars round up of a year in film
Bhakti Shringarpure and Madhuri Sastry debrief a year in cinema, and what it says about our cultural and political moment today.
You’ve heard the rumors and followed the scandals breaking out at film festivals and award shows. It’s been an unusual and unpredictable year for popular cinema. This year’s film line-up features revenge in Iran, the supernatural power of Black music, murder in Palestine, several strong and assertive women, alien conspiracy, left-radical American revolutionaries, Brazilian dictatorship, and a rave in Morocco.
Over 4000 film workers have signed a pledge to boycott Israeli film institutions that are complicit in genocide in Palestine.
Award shows have censored speeches and festival directors have issued apologies.
Is it the dawn of a woke and progressive Hollywood?
Are the Oscars finally not #SoWhite anymore?
Are this year’s movies truly more political?
Madhuri and Bhakti have watched all the movies, rounded up reviews, and combed through the hype. They’ve spotted the winners, the losers, the tearjerkers, the phony radicals and the absolute beauties.
Come and get your film fix!
