Film club — Join us for our first ever film club! Filmmaker Seán Murray, historian Sherry Zane and artist Danny Devenny will discuss Murray’s latest documentary Journacide: The War on Truth. Murray investigates the shocking death toll of journalists and media workers in Palestine and Lebanon (over 260 in Gaza in the last three years and 29 in Lebanon). Murray and Devenny are both from Belfast and will also reflect on Ireland’s long history of solidarity with Palestine. This conversation will be livestreamed on October 25, 2026 at 6pm Dublin on YouTube, Substack and Facebook. Set your reminder below:
Book club — Sahra Noor will be in conversation with me about her memoir Salt in the Snow: A Somali Immigration Story. From the sunlit courtyard of her family home in Mogadishu to the icy streets of Minneapolis, Salt in the Snow is a deeply personal memoir about family and migration. Raised in a close-knit, multigenerational Somali household, Sahra was shaped early by tradition and by the towering presence of her father. Fleeing from war, she arrived in the United States as a teenager and everything changed. And on a different note, a bit of self-promotion: my book Leila Aboulela: Writing as Refuge has now been published and is available in Europe and North America. It is the first full-length biography of Sudanese writer Leila Aboulela, an award winning author who has published seven novels, two short story collections, and dozens of radio plays. Aboulela is known for her sensitive and complex exploration of ordinary Muslim women, the migration experience, and questions of belonging and identity. The biography explores Aboulela’s childhood and youth in Khartoum, her difficult migration to Scotland, and her unusual journey to becoming a writer. It is the first in a series of African writers’ biographies that I am co-editing with Lily Saint. We are excited about forthcoming biographies on JM Coetzee, Tsitsi Dangarembga, Abdulrazak Gurnah, Rebecca Njau and Véronique Tadjo, among others.
You can buy a copy or order one for your library here.
If you’re in Paris, join me and Olivia Snaije for a event at The Red Wheelbarrow bookstore on October 27th, Tuesday at 7pm. And if you’re in London, I will be in conversation with Ida Hadjivayanis at SOAS on the evening of November 10th, Tuesday, details coming soon.
